Vineyard Notes
An unusually cool, late season with below-average January temperatures contributing to a delayed start to harvest, yet classic autumnal weather was perfect for ripening the reds. Yields were low, a benefit in a cooler, later season, and reds were picked in outstanding condition with developed flavour, good density and fine, ripe tannins.
Production Notes
2018: Was another consistent vintage. Excellent budburst across all varieties was followed by a delightfully warm November, perfect for a good fruit set. Summer was mild, leading into cool, dry conditions for harvest. Fruit ripened slowly, accumulating intense varietal flavours and bright natural acid, and was harvested under clear skies through March and April. 2017: A cooler-than-average growing season, the milder conditions allowed for a slow accumulation of varietal character, development of fine tannins and well-balanced acidity. A wine of great structure and complexity, displaying bright red and dark berry fruit notes, hints of cedar, black olive, dark chocolate, and a touch of bay leaf adding a nice savoury element. The 2017 is medium-bodied and drinks well now but will reward cellaring of up to 20 years. Drink now - 2037 2016: Pristine fruit and infinite drinkability characterise our Cabernets from the 2016 vintage. This is a medium-bodied wine with great structure, complexity and depth of flavour, helped along by a near-perfect growing season and an exceptional autumnal harvest period. Displaying dark berry fruit character, the gravelly, earthy notes so intrinsic to our region and excellent oak integration with hints of cocoa and cedar, the wine's balance, even at this early stage bode well for a long, elegant future. Drink now - 2036 2015: A challenging growing season providing low yields and consistently warm temperatures leading to early tannin ripeness. The result is a wine of great structure, complexity and depth of flavour, yet also displaying elegance and balance. Complex aromas of black fruits, notes of mocha and dusty oak follow through on the palate with a core of vibrant sweet black fruits, graphite nuances, hints of cocoa and cedar. Drink now to 2035. 2014: A complex bouquet of dark berry fruits with hints of violets, cocoa and cedar. The palate displays a core of vibrant sweet black and red berry fruit with earthy gravelly nuances contributing a nice savoury element to the wine. Hints of cedar and chocolate add further complexity and texture with great length and balance, supported by fine-grained tannins and seamlessly integrated French oak. Drink now to 2034. 2013: Lifted briary aromas with hints of spice, dark chocolate and blackberry fruits. The palate displays sweet dark berry fruit with earthy gravelly notes. Hints of cedar and bay leaf add a nice savoury element to the wine. The wine is rich and complex with great length and balance supported by fine-grained tannins and seamlessly integrated French oak. Drink now to 2028. 2012: Still incredibly youthful, with a complex bouquet of redcurrants, raspberries, red liquorice, dark chocolate, hints of spice, cigar box, sawdust and smokiness. On the palate, juicy blueberry and black cherry fruit notes intertwine with more evolved raisiny notes, and delicate spice notes of cloves, cacao, and even juniper. Fine, silky tannins, well-integrated oak, and great acidity and balance complete a package that still has many years of drinking enjoyment. Drink now to 2027. 2011: The warm growing season provided ideal conditions to craft a rich, complex Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot. Currently sitting in a superb drinking window, with juicy, sweet dark berry fruit notes still in prime position and just a hint of what’s to come as the wine softens into earthy, chocolatey maturity. The wine's richness, complexity and elegant, chalky tannins are best exposed by decanting. 2010: From a near-perfect growing season, this is a complex and beautifully balanced wine displaying lifted dark berry fruit, earthy tones, dark chocolate and bay leaf. Fine, layered tannins, seamlessly integrated French oak and extraordinary length complete the package which will only improve with age. Drink now to 2030. 2009: Using one of our highest-ever percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend has created a structural, rich, yet balanced wine with exceptional length and longevity. Dark cassis and mulberry fruits, savoury dark chocolate, bay leaf and soft spice notes, fine-grained tannins and seamlessly integrated toasty oak. Drink now to 2029. 2008: Ripe, soft dark berry fruit, black olives and characteristic Margaret River bay leaf notes dominate in this low-yielding, warm-season wine. A wine of great fruit complexity, now nicely softening into secondary character, with ripe, chunky tannins and a savoury, toasty oak influence. Drink now to 2023. 2007: The warm, dry 2007 vintage produced a rich, ripe concentrated and structural wine which has now developed into softness, complexity and maturity. Deep garnet colour, well-developed fruit character of dried raisins, braised prunes and mulberry compote, pure dark chocolate, cherry notes and a gravelly, earthy minerality combine to display a complex and beguiling nose which follows through on the palate. The texture is weighty and mouth-coating without feeling heavy, tannins are soft and velvety. Enjoy in the near future. Drink now to 2025 2005: One of our most Bordeaux-like Cabernets, this is a layered, complex wine displaying lovely dark fruits in the blackberry spectrum, savoury bay leaf character and hints of chocolate, balanced by finely integrated French oak. The soft, chalky tannins encourage drinking now but will reward those who can cellar a little longer.
