Introducing Winestate Magazine "Australian Winemaker of the Year 2002/03" - Cliff Royle.

Cliff Royle, Voyager Estate’s Chief Winemaker, has long had a passion for food and wine. His interest was initiated early in his career when he was employed with the Matilda Bay Brewing Company, working with people like Philip Sexton and Stuart Lofthouse.

It was as bottle shop manager at the Redback Brewery in Melbourne that he first met Stuart Pym. Stuart became Voyager Estate’s winemaker in 1992. Both Stuart and his winemaking partner, Janice McDonald, encouraged Cliff to study winemaking.

Fittingly, after completing his Bachelor of Applied Science (Oenology) at Charles Sturt University, it was Stuart that employed Cliff as his assistant in 1997. After 4 years as Stuart’s assistant, his fifth and consecutive vintages have been his own.

Several wines from Cliff’s vintages have already been met with critical acclaim by a number of leading wine writers, show judges and wine critics. He believes the depth of flavour, structure and elegance of grapes in the Margaret River region provide him with the necessary conditions to produce superb wines.

Cliff was born in Frankston, Victoria, in 1967 but has spent most of his life in Western Australia.
