Soil composition and quality is a benchmark by which wines are judged. Raw material quality is critical. With the wide variety of soils in the Margaret River area, soil and variety-matching is essential. This particularly applies to the premium wines of Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon.

Soils at Voyager Estate comprise red/brown gravelly loam ranging in depths of 1 - 2 metres over a clay base. Located in the southern latitude of the south west corner of WA the region has a climate remarkably similar to the Bordeaux region of France. The vineyard experiences cool to cold winters with a ripening period characterised by moderately warm, dry conditions with little rain. Flavour, acid and tannin structures are all enhanced by the Indian Ocean sea breezes that ensure a steady, uniform grape-ripening environment.

Because of the lower latitude of around 34° south, all vines are planted in a north/south direction to fully exploit the sunlight available. All vines are trained to the VSP (Vertical Shoot Positioning). Standard and intensive canopy management including crop-thinning is employed to control yield with computer-controlled irrigation. Voyager Estate operates under a minimal input philosophy to maintain our quality benchmark.

Computer-controlled irrigation (when necessary) from the vineyard’s own 275,000 litre dam is available.
