Chenin Blanc 2005
According to ‘Golf Magazine’, this wine shows just how
good Chenin Blanc can be in Margaret River. While the
2005 vintage provided ideal conditions for producing
aromatic whites, some credit must go to the vineyard
and winery! With low crop levels and cool, clean
fermentations, a deliciously refreshing, aromatic
Chenin Blanc has been expertly achieved. Fresh tropical
fruit salad can be seen on the nose with a balance of
sweetness and crisp acidity on the palate.
Sauvignon Blanc 2005
Hand-picked from low-yielding 26-year old vines,
then hand-sorted and whole-bunch pressed, the 2005
Sauvignon Blanc is, according to Tim White of ‘The
Australian Financial Review’, “...fabulous Sauvignon”.
Cool fermentation in stainless steel has assisted in
retaining fresh primary characters and pristine fruit
clarity, resulting in a “mouth-sucking and succulent
wine with plenty of tang and bite.”
Sauvignon Blanc Semillon 2005
If you plan to be the toast of your next dinner party,
Frank Moreau of Est Restaurant in Sydney suggests
you grab some of this. Margaret River’s quintessential
blend of crisp Sauvignon Blanc and grassy Semillon
make this the perfect aperitif or accompaniment to
fresh seafood dishes. Reflecting classic characters,
the 2005 vintage shows gooseberry and passionfruit, a
touch of grassiness and a fine backbone of acidity.
Chardonnay 2004
The new French clones of chardonnay we planted a
few years ago seem to have paid dividends. Our 2004
Chardonnay was awarded a gold medal and named
Pick of the Region, Overall Best Varietal, Overall Best
Value and Overall Top Six by ‘SCOOP Magazine’ in their
Best of the West Regional Tasting recently. Ralph Kyte
Powell awarded it five out of five stars, John Jens
named it our “greatest wine ever” and Jane Faulkner
felt like screaming “touchdown!” when she tasted it.
If you don’t get in quickly the only thing you will be
reading about our 2004 Chardonnay in the future is
“Sold Out!”
Reserve Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2002
If you are after a Margaret River Semillon/Sauvignon
Blanc blend with a difference, this is the wine for you. A
70/30 blend sourced from our oldest vines, it is barrel-
fermented then aged for 10 months in 100% French oak.
More complex than its fresh and fruity counterparts
from the region, the nose shows aromatic gooseberry
and blossom characters with cedary oak nuances.
Citrus peel and freshly cut herbs feature on the palate,
with an austere structure and natural acidity worthy of
further aging.
Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot 2004
Only released in March this year, Voyager Estate’s
Girt by Sea Cabernet Merlot is already establishing a
reputation for itself as an excellent value Margaret
River red from the Voyager Estate range. Campbell
Mattinson sees cassis, chocolate and gravel on the
palate with fleshy, fragrant fruit and ripe tannins. The
chilly winter weather has set in, so stoke those fires,
and as Campbell says, “Set up the red meat, and let’s
get stuck in!”
Shiraz 2004
First Halliday nominated it in his Top 101 of 2006, then AGT
Wine Magazine placed it #4 in their Top 100 Releases, and
now Nick Stock has recently named it one of his top 10
Australian Shirazes for winter 06. With an “an engaging
mix of intensity and restraint”, this opaque purple wine
has a fragrant nose of berries and spice. The palate
shows brilliant clarity of fruit and a silky finish with ultra-
ripe tannins. It’s the Margaret River Shiraz that’s giving
South Australia a run for its money.
Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2002
Despite its critics, the cool and dry 2002 growing
season, with its extremely low yields, has produced a
wine that has the media raving. Max Allen asserts it
is a “magnificent example of how the ‘02 vintage in
Margaret River produced some really fine, elegant red
wine”; Huon Hooke claims it “has the world at its feet”;
Peter Dietch believes our “cabernets are now in the
same league as the likes of Cullen and Moss Wood”; and
Tim White calls it “First Class Cabernet.” Ultimately you
are our most important critic, but do not delay your
purchase, stocks will not last.
VOC Collection Shiraz 2003
The first release from our new VOC Collection (see
Snippits, pages 4 & 5), the 2003 VOC Collection Shiraz
offers you the chance to stock your cellar with
something unusual from the Voyager Estate vineyards.
Sourced from the Estate’s oldest shiraz vines, 20 barrels
were hand-selected for extended maturation in new
and older French oak barriques. The resulting wine,
showing blood plums, savoury spices and minerality
derived from our gravelly soils, exudes elegance. A
worthy and rare addition to your cellar.
